Question 1

Will my bill jump when the batteries are built?

Accepted Answer

Not as a single jump. The cost enters the rate base and is recovered gradually over the equipment's life, spread across millions of customers, so the month-to-month effect is modest. Fuel costs and storm recovery will move your bill more in the short term.

Question 2

What is an integrated resource plan?

Accepted Answer

It is the long-range forecast Georgia Power files with the Public Service Commission, roughly every three years, laying out what it expects to build and retire to meet demand. The commission holds hearings and votes on it. The record is public and posted in the commission's docket.

Question 3

Do the batteries replace gas and coal plants?

Accepted Answer

Mostly they add to the system rather than replace it, because storage shifts power in time rather than generating it. Some older units are still slated to retire on their own timelines, but the storage is there largely to cover the growing evening peak.

Question 4

Why is demand growing so fast in Georgia?

Accepted Answer

The company's filings point mainly to data centers around metro Atlanta and large new factories, including the Hyundai plant near Savannah. These are big, steady loads, and the forecasts of them can change, which is one reason the plan may be revised.
